 Let's try a wikipage!

We can go to my favorite site for kids.

Assignment # 7:  Podcasts:  I had difficulty finding podcasts that weren't blocked at school, so I just took what I could find.  (They aren't necessarily of interest to me.)

1.)  http://www.a1freesoundeffects.com/animal.html

I don't know if these would be considered podcasts, but... THese were short 1-5 second audio sounds of various animals and noises. It might be fun to share them with kids, and I actually have a lesson that it would go along with.

2. ) At "beat-dyslexia.com" I found an audio podcast that welcomed parents to a 3D Learner program to help identify and aide their child's success in reading.  It was about 2-3 minutes long and was presented by a couple by the name of Mark and Mira Halpart.  Basically it was a sales pitch, but it offered some target areas to focus on when you are dealing with a possibly dyslexic student.

3.)At "ldpodcast.blogspot.com" I found an audio "podcast show" where Whitney Hoffman was interviewing a reading specialist named Nina Straitman.  It was a 30 minute podcast about how language comprehension because of this altered development.

4.)  I came upon a podcast while I was searching for my blogs last week.  It was on the ASCD site and featured Elona Hartjes.  It was an audio podcast about 3 minutes long and talked about things she did in her classroom and what her students taught her about classroom management and teaching nd how she was selected for an award because of the strategies she used.  I found it interesting to listen to, actually.

Assignment # 6:  Blogs

1. ASCD Blog site for Differentiating Instruction  I liked this mostly for Ms. Hartjes' podcast on classroom management.  Any small piece of advice from an acredited teacher is useful to me.  Any ideas in which she mentioned that I agreed with or already implement in my own classroom helped me to  feel more confident in my goal of wanting my children to love school and to feel loved while they are learning in my kindergarten classroom.

2.  BLOG on Autism   This had a magnitude of information!  With inclusion being pushed in our schools and the number of autistic diagnoses on the rise, it was only a matter of time before I would need this information.  This year I am pleasantly surprised with the positive interaction I am achieving with my autistic student, but am still striving to find the right strategies to best communicate and continue his learning goals.  This blog has plenty of resources to share, especially comments from those who have worked with an autistic child.

3. kinderworks.blogspot    I really liked this one! I was searching for reading readiness, which this included,  but it also referenced a great site with Steven Spangler and some exciting science experiments.  Kids couldn't help but be excited about Science with these activities.   It allows kids to be involved in the learning process instead of just listening or watching.  Also, it included a site for kids called Kerpoof where they can use thier creavity to make movies and stories.  Great ideas!

Assignment#3:  Here is my delicious site.

Class Assignment #2:

I did a search on *Marie Antoinette*.  I have always been interested in her story, but have never really seen it publicized much.  My general search on Google resulted in 3,120,000 results.

Of the first 10 links, I found a possible 3 that might be useful.  I narrowed the results down with an advanced search by including atleast one of the words Bradford or county (accidentally, kinda) and got 844,000.  Then  including the exact words Bradford County and got 719. Finally, I put in that atleast one word be biography or queen and I got 578 results.  Just biograhy resulted in 502.

Some sites I thought might be useful were "the official site"  for the marie antoinette movie.  Another was the "wikipedia", and lastly one called "Queen of France."

On Yahoo I got 17,500,000 in general search results with 4 of the first 10 looking useful.  The advanced results with exact phrase Bradford County, and any of the words queen or biography resulted in 203.  Some  possible useful sites were  Royalty , local history, and MA's biography

Ask  gave me 781,200 general results and only 2 useful sites from the first 10.    7 pages of results for advanced search including exact phrase bradford county and atleast one of the words being queen or biography.  Ask did not give me a number for how many  results.  (Atleast none that I could find.) Some useful sights from this search were   "a view", and the same biography link from above.  All the others were bed and breakfasts!  Yikes!  what happened to all the history?!

I have always used Google just because it was what I was taught on.  I do like it because its home page is simple and to the point.  No extra hubub to search through.    I thought Ask Jeeves had an attractive home page, and I liked the advanced search suggestions that were listed with the general search.  It gave me some more specific ideas of what I could look for, but I wasn't impressed with my final results, compared to the others.  I liked that Yahoo numbered their results.  It just made it simpler to keep track of where i was.  But i did not like all the extra stuff on Yahoo's home page. I felt like I was being distracted from the main purpose of why I'm there. (to search for something specific.)

I will probably continue to use Google because I am a creature of habit and it is what i'm used to, but also because these resulsts show that it is reliable.  I may try Yahoo now and again because  the final results were similar to Google, just not as many to choose from.  I am definitely not impressed with Ask Jeeves.  The final results did not give me any historical information.
