Blog Assignment

I'm not sure I understand the reasons we would use a blog page at Wyalusing. I could see using it in place of our website. It would also be sort-of fun to have discussions between the students in the classroom. Of course, I would be nervous what some of my students would write. Students will probably come up with excuses of why they couldn't get to a computer!! If done correctly, students could have a chance to share their work. In years past, we have allowed their best work to be put on a bulletin board for an open house. This way, perhaps we would always get the best work because everyone else would see it. On the other hand, a student may withdrawl and not write much because they are worried what everyone else would think. On a side note, I did not find this 21classes website user-friendly! I had a hard time trying to put things on it. It still does not look like what I wanted it to.

Chatroom Assignment

Option #3

I could see using a chatroom for many different ideas. I think it would be a great way to get to know what other physical education programs look like in the area. I think it would be wonderful to talk to other professionals who, for the most part, enjoy their job and enjoy discussing different ideas. Wow! I might become motivated to improve our program here or come up with new ideas.

On a more serious note, with only three teachers (and an aide) in the high school and one in the elementary school, it would definately be beneficial to discuss and get ideas of . it would be fun to see what fintess tests are given, what is in their curriculum, how grades are decided etc.

The drawbacks are of course time. We have so much to do at school, especially at the computer, that it takes away from teaching, in my opinion. With a family at home, the last thing I often want to do is think about work when I leave school at the end of the day.

Lesson Plan: I would use this website as an introduction to mental health with my ninth graders. Most of what I teach in this health class as an introduction to other subjects (biology, anatomy, etc.) I think it would work best if the students were in groups with specific questions to answer in order to keep them on task. This same website could be used as a challenge to my seventh graders. In the digestive system portion, there is a great game called "Organize your Organs".

Powerpoint Assignment

Lesson Plan: I would use this type of presentation in my seventh grade health class as part of our nutrition unit. (This is just the beginning of the topic). I really like this type of powerpoint becaue my students would be able to work at their own speed.

Microsoft Excel Assignment

Lesson Plan: In my seventh grade health class, we discuss current trends in nutrition. We also watch and discuss the movie "Super Size Me". As an assignment, the students are broken up into groups and each group is assigned a food category. For the example attached, I used a large order of french fries. Other groups may be burgers, salads, breakfasts, desserts, etc. Next, the group must research the food items for fast food resteraunts and identify the calories, grams of fat, saturated fat, trans fat, and carbohydrates. By entering it into a spreadsheet, the students can sort by any of the categories to find out which food would be the best or worst choice.
