Assignment: 3/25/08, Blog!
The intention of this blog mirrors the chatroom assignment as another way, perhaps more convienient than the chatroom, for school nurses to "converse" about what's happening. As I mentioned below there are a group of us that meet over dinner and listen to a speaker, such as a pediatric physical therapist or our state representative. This is a way that we could all check in with eachother without having to mass email all of us. We'd all get the same messages at the same time. Here is the link!

Assignment: 3/18/08, Professional Chatroom
As a nurse employed in a school system, you are surrounded by other professionals, most of whom are not nurses. A chat room would be a very effective means of communicating between school nurses from other buildings or districts. The chat room could be set up as an open forum for questions and feedback or could be set up as a meeting, perhaps during a lunch time once a week or once a month. Currently a group of school nurses in this region meet in the evening approximately once a season at a restaurant usually involving a speaker and dinner. A chat room online would be a way to informally "meet" with concerns or ideas of how things work best in your school, etc... From my personal perspective as a new school nurse, I would love it; I have a lot of questions every day. This way, I could post them and get a variety of answers. Most school nurses converse or phone other school nurses, whether in the same district or different districts to discuss policy issues or current health issues.
Drawbacks could include various interest levels. Nurses who are not new and don't have the million questions I do, may not have time or energy to look and answer all of my questions! Also, not being face to face and the risk of not understanding what the person actually means when conversing or offering feedback.

Assignment #4 - 2-21-08 WebQuest
Assigment #3 - 2-14-08 Virtual Tour:
This lesson would be a wrap-up or lesson starter/interest sparker for a day that we learn about the human skeleton.
This site is the Virtual Body; this could be used in an anatomy and physiology class in a high school setting. Go to http://www.medtropolis.com/VBody.asp and choose English, then choose Skeleton- “Bones narrative” first which explains the skeleton’s purpose and also has a picture; will take approximately two- three minutes. Next would be the “Zoom-In” section to learn about bone names and locations. Allow approximately three minutes. Then we would select the “build a skeleton” game. The bones all fall to the “ground” and you have to pick and drag them back to the proper places, takes approximately 1 minute. This could take up to ten minutes.
Same as above, except the topic would be the Digestive Tract.
Next, we would look into the digestive tract: http://www.medtropolis.com/VBody.asp - this link will take you to the Virtual Body site, choose English, or Spanish if you like, choose Digestive Tract. Then we will proceed to go through each category- “Guided Tour” narrative which would take approximately three minutes, Zoom-In” organ specific learning and allow up to three minutes, and “Organize Your Organs” game, which may take two minutes. This will take up to approximately ten minutes.
Assignment #2
Ideally this would include one or more seniors that might be interested in either health or education as a future career opportunity and could tie a project like this into their senior project. Children seem to be more attentive if they have a student presenter, as compared with a teacher or adult presenter!
I would be a resource to the senior(s); with my guidance, they could create a powerpoint presentation, such as the one here, to present health information to a selected group of students, most likely fourth, fifth, or sixth grades.

Assignment #1
Early in the fall, after completing a chosen 3rd grade class’s height/weight screening (approx 15 minutes), we will go to the computer lab; the health office log-in excel spreadsheet will be ready on the computer screens. They will practice entering their names, pulling the time from the current time on the computer screen, and typing in why they might visit the health office. (This will take approximately 15 minutes)
We will discuss that through the self log-in process, they will have the cool responsibility to make sure that they are accounted for, and that their needs are communicated in their own words. That will allow the nurse to spend more time with them and they will get more attention! With 15 minutes remaining, this group will practice entering the health office, successfully enter the following data: names, date/time, grade, and an example of why they are visiting the health office that day. If a student or a parent needed to know about visit information, the student could sort for his data, or if not the student, I would be able to sort for the information.
