Blog Assignment-http://singlemarriedlife.21classes.com
I could use this type of assignment with my Marriage and Single living class. We study alot of personal development topics like strengths and goals that would lend itself to using a blog. I also assign students to write journal entries to thought questions that would work well with this. The disadvantage is that many journals might be private thoughts and students would not want to share. An advantage I could see would be that students that enjoy technology could be more motivated to do assignments that way. Also students that are struggling could see others comments and could be helped by that if the don't just copycat someone else.

Excel Assignment- I currently do a grocery shopping exercise with the Exploring FACS class. They are to plan meals for 1 day then select groceries and total the cost using store flyers. Then they list the foods they chose on the pyramid to test for nutritional balance.
I would use excel for them to put foods on , total their cost and count servings from each group. When I introduce this project I would require them to include a spreadsheet to aid them in organizing the data. I would show a demo spreadsheet and ask them to follow my format rather than create their own. As a class we would go to the computer labs to work then any student not done would have to finish on their own.
Virtual Technology-
For the Child Development Class- unit on child birth- I will use the Virtual tour of Geisinger Janet Weis Children's center- After discussing methods of childbirth and talking about birthing and delivery rooms we will spend one day in the computer room. where the whole class will take a tour of the maternity center at Geisinger. Then I will give them an assignment for 1/2 the period to find another hospital virtual tours to view other obstetrics departments. The website to the class tour is
http://www.geisinger.org/services/pediatrics/jwch_virtual_tour/tour_birth_room.html The nexyt day we will share our findings in a discussion.
Inspiration Assignment- I would use this in parenting Class for students to organize content about either infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. I would assign 3 to 4 students to each age group to create an outline to describe the 4 types of development for that age group. It needs to include 4 items under each type of development. We would go to the computer rooms to work on this for 2-3 days and have a time to present these to the rest of the class. It would be a great review for the final in my class.attached is a sample I started

Chatroom assignment- I watched a wonderful edition of Dateline last evening on NBC. It was about conjoined twins. It followed their story before birth and through a separation operation to their lives today- 5 years later. I could see using something like that for my Child Development class as an extra credit assignment where the students would watch the program then we would discuss our thoughts and feelings for 1 hour after the show. The problem with this idea would be for me to be able to preview and prepare for the discussion plus I would not know abour such a great new program before it airs. I also like to preview any video materials before I use them in class to be sure it is appropriate. I would be great to discuss a program right after it airs rather than almost 24 hours later. It would give kids a chance to react while their feelings are fresh.
A second way that a chatroom would be great for me would be one that would be with FACS teachers all over the county or anywhere. I miss being able to communicate with others in my field and would love to be able to discuss ideas and concerns in my classes with another home-ec teacher. My problem would be getting connected with other teachers in my field and then being able to find a time when most could participate.
