Blog Assignment #7

As of now I am not a big fan of blogs.  They still seem quite challenging to me.  Much of the information I would post on a blog I can just as easily post on my school web page, such as long term assignments as well as lesson plans.  The big difference between the two is that students can post comments and/or questions on the blog where with the school website they would have to interact by way of email.  With the blog they could see each others comments and questions as well as my responses.  (at least I think that is how it would work).  Using a blog definitely has some advantages but if I used it as an educational tool it would be just one more thing to keep updated and check on a regular basis.  Although technology is wonderful, everything takes time and sometimes that is a precious comodity.

Chat room assignment # 6

I think a chat room could be a useful tool to facilitate students studying for a trigonometry test. Many students come to see me the morning or day of a test with questions about concepts they don’t quite understand.  My thought is to set up a chat room that would be available for students to access the night before a test.  This would enable me to answer question that students might have.  It would also be an outlet for students to help each other by discussing problems and what methods they use to solve them as well as how they remember procedures for solving problems.  Additionally, it would allow me to explain problems and solutions to students.  Students must understand that this chat room is strictly for studying and only acceptable language is allowed.

Pros – answering questions before test day

            Students helping each other study

Helping students study for the test

Students who are quiet in class might be more inclined to ask questions through a chat room.

Cons- It would be set up for a limited time the night before the test, and many students might not be available during that time due to sporting events or extracurricular activities

Students might not have access to internet.

I would have to make sure that I was available the night and time of the chat room.

Virtual Tour Assignment #3:

I am teaching an SAT prep course for juniors.  One of the activities they do at the beginning of the course is to fill out a form choosing 3 colleges that they are interested in attending and looking up various types of information about the college. They have access to the College Handbooks as well as computers.  We spend about 3 class periods doing this activity.  This activity gives them a chance to do a little research on different colleges they are interested in and to find out what is involved in applying to these colleges.  I found a great website when doing this assignment that I think the students will enjoy using in the future.  It provides an easy way of finding college sites (in all states) and links them to the college website and to a virtual tour of the college, where applicable.

I would use the spreadsheet in class for students to investigate the critical points for polynomial equations.  I would supply each student with a word document explaining the lab and how to set up the spreadsheet.  It would include instructions for typing formulas and how to narrow down the exact critical points to the tenth of a point.
