Chatroom Assignment

I would like to use a chatroom to hold a special education meeting every other week, or at least once a month.  It is very difficult to get everyone together in one location to hold a departmental meeting with people in the elementary school, high school, administration building, and a school psychologist that is not always on location.  A chat room would provide the opportunity for everyone to be together while still being in seperate places.  Quite often I have questions that could be answered by other special education professionals within the district, but there is no regular meeting set up at this time where I could ask.  Granted, I could send an email and wait for a reply, but if there was a time each month set aside for our team, it would be the perfect time to ask.  This would also allow me to recieve the answers/opinions of multiple special educators instead of only one (as I would through email).  It would also be a great time to share ideas that may be useful to other teachers.  Having a chat room set up would also be nice in order to quickly "meet" with a few educators on a specific topic.  An email could be sent to meet in the chatroom at a specific time, and the few teachers/administrators could discuss their issues more promptly and conveniently than tyring to find a meeting time and place.

Benefits - A regular time to share and ask questions among other special educators

                Convenient

More ideas would be generated/shared than would be between two people talking about an issue

School psychologist would be more available since she is only in the district two days a week

Drawbacks - May not be paying avid attention to what is going on in the chat room

Could be working on other tasks at the same time

Some stories/ideas/answers are hard to express in written form

Kidspiration Assignment

My 4th grade students take a field trip to Harrisburg.  Prior to leaving, as we were looking up and learning information about the three main places we would visit - The Capital Building, Whitaker Science Center/IMAX, and Hershey's Chocolate World - I would have them complete this assignment.  They would be expected to come up with three questions/ideas for each place we visit, to which they would find answers to on their trip.  These could be things they are curious about or information they would just like to find out.  This portion would be their homework, to come up with the questions for each area.  Then we would spend in class time to create a web in Kidspiration.  They would have to give a title in the center bubble, attach a picture with a caption for each place we will visit, and then attach their three questions to each location icon.  I would give two class periods to complete the work on the computer.  Then, when we took the field trip, each child would be responsible for finding the answers to their respective questions.  They would type these answers into the list view of their kidspiration document, on the second line of each bubble, under the question.  Their answers would not appear on the concept map view, but would appear on the list view.  I have demonstrated how they would answer questions with the Hershey's Chocolate World portion of the sample.

I attached the evaulation sheet as well, because I don't think the link for that will work unless you are on my computer.

Virtual Technology/Tours Assignment

My 4th grade students do a social studies unit on rainforests.  This virtual rainforest fits in perfect with them learning more information about different rainforests.  I would set up a class period to go to the computer lab (45 minutes).  Students would not complete this assignment outside of class at all.  I would create a task sheet containing a question from each of the virtual links in the rainforest (there are a total of 24).  Students would have the 45 minute period to answer as many questions on the task sheet as they are able.   They would be required to answer at least 10 questions, but encouraged to answer as many as they can.  Students would also be required to come up with their own question (only one) from any information they learn from the website.  These questions would be posed to the entire class the following day.  If students are unable to answer their peers' questions, I would have the page up in the classroom to search together to find the answers.

Assignment #2 - PowerPoint

I would use PowerPoint with my students for multiple exercises in different subject areas.  This assignment is during students' Gettysburg unit to prepare for their big field trip.  I would assign students to work in pairs and find at least five facts about Gettysburg on the internet, in books, or in other materials available to them.  Students would hand these facts in to me.  Then, I would take their information and create a few short presentations with 10 facts and questions for students to read through and answer.   This is a great feature that I have never used before.  I'm also thinking on how to make a jeopardy-like game for them to use with these features!

Assignment #1 - Excel

I would use excel with my students during our math unit on different types of graphs.  After learning about the different types of graphs, such as line graphs, bar graphs, and pie charts, I would have students prepare their own project using charts.  Students would choose a topic to poll the class on, such as favorite ice cream flavors.  Students would complete a survey of the class and tally the answers.  Then they would enter the information into an excel spreadsheet.  Students would then be asked to create a chart to go with their information, to show the information in another format.  If appropriate, students could create two charts (as in the example with a bar and pie chart) to show the data in multiple ways.  This assignment would be worked on during class time.  After students completed the assignment in class, I may also assign a simple homework assignment where students would have to create a chart on their own using excel.
