Making a brochure using Word.

Hello my name is Claudia Chacona and I am techology challenged. I teach third grade at Lynch-Bustin Elementary School in Athens, PA.  I am married to a wonderful man named Paul. Some of my interests include golfing, watching Penn State Football, and reading. Teaching is my second career, in my first career I was a Registered Dietitian. I am very lucky in that I have had two careers that I really love. I am here to learn more about technology, which should help me in everyday life and in turn enhace my teaching skills.

Powerpoint Presentation; Our Power Point Presentation is on the Water Cycle complete with song. We can stop after each slide and explain that particular part of the water cycle. I think the students will really learn from the Power Point Presentation instead of looking at me all the time. Our Power Point Presentation is found at:

Lesson Plans;

Pod Casting: I am not very familiar with pod casting it is very new to me. I would use podcasting to teach speciality content in Science and Social Studies. The main problem I see with pod casting is the review of podcasts prior to showing or the time to create your own. It is nice to share information with co teachers. I see teachers collaborating and coming up with lists of acceptable pod casts. One pod casting site for teaching is

www.teachertube.com The podcast our group did was on the water cycle. We sang an opening song which is would be the anticipatory set or introduction to the Water Cycle.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WSuZbl9Zqs

Online Collaboration Tools: WIKI and webpages are designed to help both teachers and students alike. I must admit my Digital Native Nephew was very impressed when I got on his  lap and  I remarked, "Oh you use WIKI too!"  What is nice about WIKI is that you can get immediate feedback during the chats. Powerpoint presentations are also a great collaboration method especially the new version 2007. You can share data with your neighbor across the hall or across the world. The students can learn so much in their chats with other  students within other cultures.

Digital Cameras: To use a digital cameras I would have actual pictures of my class as well  individual pictures. I would then tranfer the pictures to  my website. I would try to update the website via pictures for seasons and special events.Another way which digital cameras are being used is by videos. My class sends and receives Flat Stanley's. Last week we received a video of East York Elementary, we got to see their school, teacher, janitor, librarian, and playground.Next week we will receive their Flat Stanley's.  Now I have to figure out how I can send them one of Lynch-Bustin Elementary. I guess that is what this class is about.

Virtual Technologies: To use virtual tours  I would have the students locate the states location this is via a game on National Geographic. I can also enhance Guided Reading by showing videos to support books such as Helen Keller.My favorite virtual tour is from East York Elementary School where we are exchanging Flat Stanely's. East York produces their own video and the website is http://animoto.com/play/1175d336675d3809c4669a38a6972de3  East York  is going to continue to send us their video of their trip to Harrisburg, their trip to a Science Center and other fun things which they will participate duriong the school year. It is great they are sharing their Flat Stanley's and some of their activities with our class. Some website to support virtual tours would include:

www.nationalgeographic.com

www.unitedstreaming.com

www.educationworld.com

www.scholastic.com;

www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/

Semantic Network:  There are some networks like Inspiration and Kidspiration which are wonderful sites for all subjects. I did suscribe to a 30 day free trial for Kidspiration. There are some  excellent organizers in Kidspiration. It does take a while to figure out how to use them correctly. The organizer I will use this week will be adapted for the Water Cycle in Science.   The Kidspiration  site is kind of fun to use because the site talks to you.

Word: There are a lot of uses of Word that I am now becoming acquainted with., One of the uses is to prepare  brochures. Barb Carl and I produced a brochure for our school on the 6 + 1 Writing Traits. This was prepared so the parents can better understand the schools' new writing methods. The students can also use Word to produce brochures on a state,  an animal or any project they are working on.

Claudia, great job! Your wiki page is very colorful and it appears that you have many hours into completing it! I bet your technology skills are not as bad as you said they were!
