Who Am I? I teach English at Athens Area High School. I teach 10 Honors which is American Literature, 11 College Prep, a Unified English Course, and Sports Literature. In the fall I am a varsity football coach where I coach defensive backs and wide receivers for the Athens Wildcats. I am also the head junior varsity football coach. In addition to football, I am also the head boys' track and field coach/sprint coach for the Wildcat track and field team. I have been teaching and coaching for 6 years now inside the Athens Area School District.
Lesson Plans
1. Inspiration
Students will use Inspiration in order to develop there pre-writing segment of their term paper. This pre-writing segment will double as anotherassignment in using he clustering and transform it into their outline. Inspiration has the capability to go back and forth from the clustering portion to the outline portion. Students must have 7 ideas not including an introductory paragraph or a concluding paragraph. The clustering and outline portions will be printed out to be handed in.
2. Podcasting
Students will record video of a Missing Person Report to be posted for students not present in class. Everyday in class a student is responsible for recording an oral presentation of 2-5 minutes of the activities covered in class for that day. The presentation will consist of the following: Day and Date, Bell-ringer, objectives set for that days class, standards that we meet by reaching the objective, a brief explanation of what was covered in class (pages read, worksheets completed, etc) homework for that evening, tests or quizzes scheduled and any other important information that was touched on in class. This Missing Person Report will then be uploaded to my school website for students who were absent from class to view. No more excuses!
3.Virtul technologies/Google Earth
Students will use Google Earth to navigate Walden Pond. Students will be given locations of where Henry David Thoreau's cabin was, the bean field, how far from town the cabin was, where town is located, even walks that he went on etc. The list can vary and can also be used to navigate Salem Mass and pin point locations from the famous Salem witch hunt of 1692. The locations from Walden will then be pinpointed using Google Earth functions of "tagging", viewing actual photos of different segments of the pond etc. I would like to try this but I need to do some more researching with Google Earth myself and how to use.
4. Non-linear PowerPoint
Students will se a non-linear PowerPoint presentation to review for a test on the history of Ben Franklin and his pieces of literature. Students will break into teams and class will be like the Jeopardy game show. Points will be awarded for correct answers. Extra credit will be given for the winning team on the test. The game is set-up (see below) but I want to take the time to make it a little more flashy! The review will then be uploaded (already done) to my school webpage so students can study on their own at home.
5. Digital Camera Poetry with PowerPoint or Microsoft Word
Students will write in 2 of the 5 different poetry styles that we have talked about in class. Students will choose a topic of choice to write about keeping in mind that both poems must convey the message of the subject matter. After completion and an editing process, students will take a digital camera and try to capture a metaphorical meaning of the poem (i.e. a picture of a rising sun to convey a new birth in a family or a candy bar stuck in a vending machine to convey frustration). Once done students will upload their digital picture into PowerPoint or Microsoft Office and type their poem underneath or get creative and lay it overtop of the image. Guidance will be given if needed.

Great Job! I enjoyed the podcast - I'm sure teenagers would really appreciate it and might even get the message.
