Hello! Welcome to my wiki page! My name is Donna, and I am a science teacher at the Troy High School.

Working together using this wiki

The group I am in created a del.icio.us account with various links for high school teachers that you can access here: Clint's Kids.

Daily assignments

Day 1 - We created a del.icio.us account with links for senior high teachers. I have an account that I had previously set up, but I do not utilize it as well as I could. I will have to work on that this year.

We also worked with Google Docs. I like the idea that one can start a document anywhere there is computer access, save the document, and then access it later, again, anywhere there is computer access. However, I am not sure that I will use this very much.

Day 2 -  Today is kind of a blur to me (Clinton is just so good at this that we cover things at lightning speed), but I do remember working on spreadsheets. I did not realize all of the different ways that I can customize spreadsheets. The class also compared Word with Desktop publisher.

Day 3 - Today we worked with graphics projects. I worked on Desktop Publisher to create a "Back to School" page. This tool makes it much easier to create brochures and newsletters, etc. with graphics. I just hope I can remember how to do it all and link it to my web page or wiki for school!

We also worked on taking graphics into Paint, and editing them for our use. I chose a graphic of a neuron. This tool may be useful when making diagrams for labeling.

Following that, we worked with Microsoft Office Picture Manager to learn how to manipulate images, that is, editing pictures for our use. We followed that up with Macromedia Fireworks 8, creating a new graphic for our wiki pages. The Fireworks has lots of interesting tools to use, and I am planning on exploring these more.

Day 4 - Today we worked with Inspiration. I really like this tool for the graphic organizers that the students can make. I also like the idea of using it for brainstorming sessions. Following that we learned how to make new folders and better organize our email accounts.

Smart Boards

Our school has purhcased the Promethean whiteboards through the CFF grant, and since I was lucky enough to have been given near the end of the school year, I thought I ought to learn a little more about it.  I think it could be very beneficial especially with students who are absent and so miss a lecture. Notes could be written and saved using the flipchart tool. When students are using the laptops in the classroom, the whiteboard offers an easy way to visually show all students "how to do" steps without having to go around to all 32 students individually. There are tutorials on You Tube and also on Atomic Learning, as well as at the companies' websites, that teachers can access and then practice using their own equipment. Clinton makes using the Smartboard look so easy! He needs to offer some classes on the smartboards through PSU!

Have a great summer.

Sounds like lack of training is such a universal problem! We've experienced that too! Hang in there. Sounds like you're working through it very well.
