Search Engines:
-
What is the text entered into the search box?
Career Exploration
-
For the basic search, how many results are returned?
Google: 3,020,000
Yahoo: 8,690,000
Ask: 2,222,000
-
Using the first 10 results, how many appear to be useful?
Google: 9 of 10 were usefeul - the 10th was okay, but not as user friendly for working with students.
Yahoo: 6 were good
2 were just okay - career related but one not geared to students very well,
and one for MIT studetns only
2 were not useful at all - one was a redirect page to another site in the top 10,
one was good on the surface, but most of the links
were down.
Overall, 3 were repeats from google.
Ask:: 8 were good
1 was another page from an earlier result
1 was a nice site, but most useful to U of Texas students
-
Make links to three sites that appear to be useful.
-
Refine your search by using the advanced search features. What did you do to refine your search?
Google: requested the exact phrase "high school"
Yahoo: same
Ask: same
-
Are the results returned significantly different in number or content?
Yes, a new set of results appeared on each engine, with only a few repeats from the original searches.
-
Compare and contrast the homepages for each of the search engines. What features do you like/dislike about them?
Google and Ask are very similar in the simplicity of the home pages. I find the few quick links that appear on google to be more useful than those that appear on Ask. Yahoo is the busies of the three home pages and somewhat distracting. Yahoo also appears to be the most "commercial" of the three with one of it's quick link being for "shopping".
-
Compare and contrast the results pages for each of the search engines. What features do you like/dislike about them?
Google: The entries are simple and to the point, easy to preview. I don't like the sponsor results cluttering the page, and I wish they would number the entries.
Yahoo: The entries are also simple and to the point and easy to preview. I like that they number the results, and that they suggest other searches to try. I don't like the sponsor results.
Ask: The etries are also simple and to the point... I don't really like the fade in when the results come up, and I don't really like the line and shading that follows your mouse as you move from one result to the next. The sponor results are distracting as well.
-
Which of the three do you find best? Why?
I have to admit, I was a yahoo fan out of habit. However, after taking a look at all three more closely, google does seem the better of the three. It has the least distractions, the results are quick and relevant, and the advanced search seems to have the best options and layout.

WEB Quests:
College Bound Art Students: http://www.milforded.org/schools/jlaw/rmurphy/wq/art.html
emailed this one to Debbie McDonald. The end result of the web quest is that students are able to fill out a
college application and prepare an art portfolio. As a guidance counselor I would love for our teachers to do an
activity like this.
Career Exploration: http://www.manning.k12.ia.us/Elementary/teachers/Kester/career.htm#Task
like this one for career exploration, could see our students in grades 7 to 9 using it to explore careers. The end result is a
brochure about the career that they are interested in, but along the way they explore their interests in terms of Holland Types
and do some pretty thorough career research.
Ancient History: http://questgarden.com/52/41/5/070613164641/index.htm
My group member teaches ancient history, and this web quest developed a great project for exploring the advancements of
the Mesopotamian culture. As a guidance counselor visiting her room, I would ask the students if they like studying
advancements/discoveries - if so they may be the investigative personality type and should explore investigative careers.
Who thought of that? http://questgarden.com/46/81/9/070218111402/index.htm
This came up as a possible math web quest from my group, but running through it, I think it could be a cross curricular activity.
It has math concepts, it has research, it has a written paper. The links are good and the sites/documents that are included make
the research totally do-able from this one quest. The only criticism I have is the color choices of the author - yuck.
