Introduction

Welcome to Mrs. Koschak's Career Exploration Web Quest for 11th graders.  Remember as you work throught this webquest that career exploration is an ongoing process.  Along the journey, you will learn about your interests, skills, and values.  You will set goals for the future, and you will begin to formulate an educational plan.  In eigth grade, you were introduced to the five guiding principles of the REAL GAME:

1)  Change is Constant

2)  Learning is ongoing

3)  Access your alies

4)  Focus on the journey

5)  Follow Your Heart

Keep these in mind always!

So.....What do you want to be????

(and how will you get there????)

The Task

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, (and you must by the way) is to complete the following:

1)  Identify your personality type

2)  Explore careers that fit your personality

3)  Develop a career plan.

4)  Map out an educational path that is right for you....remember, learning is ongoing!

The Process

To accomplish your mission, follow the steps below:

1)  First you will access choices explorer .

Choices Explorer is an online career exploration site.  It can be accessed at www.bridges.com from any computer in the school or at home.  Your parents can join in the exploration fun by setting up their own account at bridges.

2)  Next, set up an account.

Your instructor or guidance counselor will give you the site id and password you will need.

3)  When your account with bridges is established, you will have access to several tools.  You should start with Choices Explorer. Look for the icon below when you are logged in:

Choices Explorer

4)  In Choices Explorer, go to the "Work" window, and click on "Start with a Quick Quiz".

This will take you to the Career Finder.  When you click on "start now", the program will ask you a series of questions.  The end result will be a report on your personality type (Realistic, Social, Artistic, Enterprising, Investigative and Conventional), and a list of potential careers that align with the answers you gave.  Print up the results of  your career finder activity.  Be sure that your name appears on the page, and add this to your career portfolio.

                                                     * (Start your journey in this area)*

5)  Explore at least one of the careers listed and complete a career activity sheet.

To explore any of the careers, simply click right on the occupation title.  The information comes from the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which you can access anytime at at www.ooh.com.  The Career Activity Sheet asks for petinent information about a specific occupation.  These are the areas you should consider when exploring a career.  Feel free to go beyond the activity sheet and check out any career videos or other resources available to you on this journey.

6)   So far you've accomplished much on your journey.  Take a break from the webquest and think about where you are.  Talk to the adults in your life about the careers you have investigated.  Try talking to someone you know who has experience in the career field you are interested in.  Networking like this can be a great step along your journey.

7)  It's time to log into choices again.   This time, access the Career Planner instead of Choices Explorer.  Look for the icon below when you log back in:

Choices Planner

8)  When you click on Career Planner, you will see that the Career Finder is available on this page.  Bravo, you've already been there, done that.  This time, try the Interest Profiler.

9)  As you work your way throught the interest profiler, you will again recieve a list of potential careers.  Your mission is to explore at least one and complete a Career Activity Sheet for your portfolio.

10)  The next step of your mission is to explore an educational path that is right for you.  You will need to go back to Choices Explorer.  This time, you will be working under the "Learn" tab.  Try the "major finder" and identify at least one major that may interest you.  When you have identified a major that may work for you, print out the information and add it to your Career Portfolio.

11)  The last step of your mission is to complete the Career Builder.  You will find this in Choices Explorer under the "Your Porftolio" tab.  Click on "Your Plans".

Your Plans

The program will take you through the steps of planning your career and education.  Be sure to print your final product.  Put this in your career portfolio and be sure to discuss your plan when you meet with the guidance counselor.

Pointers:

Choices Explorer, Choices Planner and the other tools available to you in at bridges.com are extensive!  Access them on your own frequently, because your interests and values will grow along your journey.  Remember Change is Constant and Career Exploration is a lifelong process!

Your Career Portfolio is kept in the guidance office.  Be sure to print a copy for yourself if you want to take the information home.

Keep track of your username and password, and don't give it away!
