With members of your group, research 1 of the following alternatives to Microsoft Office:
Open Office
Google Docs
Corel WordPerfect Office
StarOffice
Lotus Symphony
Be prepared to give a short presentation to the class. Your presentation should include cost, compatible platforms, compatibility with other office productivity software, public opinion/customer satisfaction, and a demonstration if availble (such as a short how-to video available from the software manufacturer or a YouTube video).

Class Meeting on October 15
As we are meeting this week, there is no assignment from the textbook to be completed. On Thursday, we will look at the important features of spreadsheets using MS Excel.
Also, you should be receiving your account information soon. Please try to download and install Office 2007 as soon as possible and alert me to any problems you encounter.
MS Excel (for October 22)
OPTIONAL SUGGESTED PRACTICE
For Office 2007 users: Show Me, pages 93-122. You can stop on page 122 after the directions about adjusting the chart color. This is optional, but if you are new to 2007, these directions do a good job of showing you how to access features that are in different spots than before. You may skip any directions ask you to save your workbook in any format other than the normal one.
For Office 2003 users: The demonstration in class the other night alerted you to many of the features of Excel I think you should know about. If you would like more practice, please check out this link: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/training/CR061831141033.aspx Please know that these tutorials are optional.
REQUIRED ASSIGNMENT FOR ALL CLASS MEMBERS
Create a spreadsheet that you can use in your classroom. Your spreadsheet can be a productivity spreadsheet that is meant to assist you in your role as a teacher, coach, or advisor, or it can take the form of an assignment that you are going to give your students. Attach your spreadsheet to an email message to me. In the body of your email, please give me a short description of the spreadsheet, your intended audience, and its purpose. The spreadsheet must contain the following elements:
at least one formula
at least one function
at least one instance of conditional formatting
borders
cell formatting
a chart
it must have data on at least two different sheets
it must have at least one formula/function that relates from one sheet to another
rename each sheet you use to have appropriate names
MS Publisher (for October 29)
OPTIONAL SUGGESTED PRACTICE
For Office 2007 users: Show Me, pages 197-212. These steps show how to get started on Publisher.
For Office 2003 users: The exercises above will work pretty well for you, too. Publisher's 2007 interface is very similar to the 2003 version.
REQUIRED ASSIGNMENT FOR ALL CLASS MEMBERS
Create a Publisher file that you can use in your classroom. Use one of the many templates that they offer you as a starting point. Your file must include at least 2 clip art images, 1 instance of rotated text, formatted font styles and sizes, a table, and anything else you feel is appropriate.
Class Meeting on November 5
On Thursday, we will be examining Microsoft Access. Access is a database program with many capabilities. There are no assignments due for this week, but many of you still need to complete assignments previously due. I would suggest using some time this week to get caught up.
MS Access (for November 12)
I know you all have been waiting for the directions for this one... The assignment for Access can be completed by doing the following:
Create a simple database that contains at least 1 table of information, a form that goes along with that table, and a report to output the data from the table. Optional: also include a query that filters the data from the table in some way.
Microsoft Integration Project (for November 19)
Throughout the semester, we have been looking at each component of the Microsoft Office suite independently of the others. In most cases for most people, this is how the programs are treated. However, Microsoft has built in many features that allow you to integrate the programs. Some examples of this are:
Incorporating data from an Excel spreadsheet into a PowerPoint presentation
Inserting a PowerPoint slide into a Word document
Embedding an Excel spreadsheet into a Word document
Copying and pasting data records from Access into PowerPoint
These are not the only the ways to link programs together, but they are some of the more common tasks. Your assignment is to create a lesson plan that integrates three of the programs that we have studied this semester. That is, you must use three of the five programs in some capacity for this assignment.
Each of the individual programs must be linked to at least one of the others, but does not have to be linked to both. Example: you decide to use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You create a spreadsheet with a chart. You insert the chart into a PowerPoint slide. You insert another PowerPoint slide into the Word document. Thus, each of the three programs is linked to at least on of the others, but the Excel spreadsheet and the Word document are not linked directly.
Your project can be either teacher-focused or student-focused. That is, you can create a project that would serve as something on the lesson plan end of things (such as a PowerPoint presentation you will present to a class that contains a summary of a class project that you used Excel to collect the data and a Word document that will be sent home as a newsletter to parents with information about the class project) or you can create a project that is designed to be completed by students and for this assignment you will be creating an example of student work.
You must submit:
A brief description of the project and its intent
Forwarded versions of each file that you create for the project
Information about how to accomplish integration tasks can be found in chapter 9 of the textbook for Office 2007 and by using websites such as:
