- made using Macromedia fireworks, an excellent tool for creating graphics using pictures or text.

About:  My name is Jason Rogers, I teach 8th and 9th grade mathematics in Athens Area School District.

MS Excel

        - Microsoft Excel is an excellent resource for home and work.  I have used Excel to list students in rossiter form as well as to create checklists for tracking student progress.  At home I have used Excel to track bills monthly to keep track of what has been paid and what has not.  I have also seen user created excel spreadsheets that double as gradebook for teachers.

Google

        - Most popular internet search tool.  In schools we usually refer our students to google as their online search tool.  Google also has an excellent document storage program letting the user create, save, send, and refine all online.  This allows a person a word processing tool from virtually anywhere in the world.

Delicious Bookmarks

        - This website http://del.icio.us/ is an excellent resource to being able to access your favorite websites from anywhere and not just home computer where they are saved under favorites.  Students could be given the web address to easily have access to links that you find educationally sound for the particular topic they are searching.  Here is a link to the delicious that we created in class. http://del.icio.us/2008trash

MS Publisher

        - An excellent tool for educators when creating non-word processing documents.  Whether it be a class brochure, certificate, or photo essay.  Publisher will meet your needs.

Photo resizing

The photo below was resized using Microsoft Picture Manager.  Very eay to use program to ensure your picture can be resized without being distorted.

Inspiration

         - Another program we learned about was Inspiration which is a concept mapping tool.  This program allows the student to manipulate shapes and thoughts throughout a diagram that makes sense to them to assist in learning.  Below is a link of a sample concept map about oceans using inspiration.

Creating Folders In Microsoft Email program

          - Finally learned how this works this week.  As email because the most used form of communication in public schools a user must understand the ease of creating folders and organizing your inbox.  I was able to create rules to send emails to certain folders which makes using email much easier and much more efficient.

 Smartboard Tablet

              - I have requisitioned a smartboard tablet for the 08-09 school year and am very anxious to be able to use it in my classroom.  The tablet functions similar to an actual smartboard but with the ability to move around the room.  The portable smartboard will project up onto a normal fixed screen but can be used from anywhere within fifty feet.  Among the many uses for the teacher it could also be used on the special education forefront with a student which may not be able to get the board whereas they could project up onto the screen right from their seat.  Our district chose to purchase these tablets for the math department rather that actual smartboards as these are a third of the price of an actual smartboard.  The following link will explain more about the Smartboard tablet. http://www2.smarttech.com/st/en-US/Products/AirLiner/default.htm

Having a smart tablet has really changed the dynamics of my classroom, and you will find it does for you too. You are even more tech literate than I am and will find its uses completely change your class. You were definitely right when you said that one shouldn't depend on the technology too much, though.
