Assignment 3--Picture Editing
These pictures are all from a trip last year, but all
changed. I'm glad to finally know how to do the editing!

Assignment 4-- Podcasts
1. What are three reasons podcasting is becoming so popular?
According to the video clip the three reasons are:
1. anyone can do it or use it and virtually any information can be available
2. subscriptions--you can "catch" any show you want and it becomes "yours"
3. gadgetry--you can use your computer or download to a portable device and "take it with you"
2. Are iPods the only device on which podcasts work?
No they work on computers and mp3 players as well.
3. Do you have to download podcasts to an iPod or can you watch them on your computer?
You can download them, but you can also view them on a computer.
4. Name three ways podcasting is different from traditional broadcasting.
First of all there is no set showing time. After a new show becomes available you can watch it anytime that is convenient. Secondly while you can choose to view the show on your computer, you can also download it to a portable device and take it with you anywhere (in the car, on the train, to work, at the gym) to view when you have time. And third all kinds of information is available in this form. It isn't dependent on someone "selling an idea" to a television executive in order to make the show available. While working on this assignment I found sites that let you download college courses, kids' school radio shows and all sorts of things! Though I didn't get any hard facts it would seem that these podcasts are also much cheaper to produce than traditional broadcasts.
5. Find at least 3 podcasts that you think could be useful to you in your role as an educator. If you have iTunes, I would start there. If you don't, search for podcasts on the web. Describethe podcasts on your wiki page.
I was amazed to find so much information available! I found a site called Wild Animal Chronicles. It had podcasts available at www.nationalgeographic.com/podcasts. It had wonderful short videos of many different animals--perfect for use in the classroom. It showed the animals and narrated with information about their habitats, range, food, homes, and other pertinent information. These were professionally done by National Geographic staff members. Then I went to a site called Radio Willow Web at www.mpsomaha.org/willow/radio. This was described as kid to kid learning literature. It was radio broadcasts performed by elementary-aged students on a wide range of topics. But each topic was addressed in sections such as "In Social Studies Class", "Fast Facts", "Vocabulary Development" and so on. There were 31 topics available from this year with other years' podcasts available to choose from. I liked that this offered just audio as I have a lot of trouble getting video clips to play in my classroom. I also found a place called Sixty Second Science at www.sciam.com. It was described as "Daily blasts of thought provoking science news". It was put out by Scientific American and again was audio only. But it had many topics to choose from listed in sections on health, space, technology, biology, mind and brain, environment, society and policy, energy, what's next ,science in service, everyday science and general sciences. I know we only needed to describe three, but I also found this really good place called Bookwink! It was located at www.bookwink.com and it had three minute video booktalks. It was aimed at kids grades 3-8 and was intended to get kids excited about reading a new book. You could search for booktalks by subject, grade level, author or title. I've been missing so much! All of these sites provide free podcasts, and there were so many others available! Now I have to figure out how to use them in my technology- poor classroom!
Assignment 5--On-Line Video
The first video that I found that I would like to use in my class can be found at http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=3153B0CC-88D3-4275-828F-B9D27A9B6D9B&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US. It is a four-minute video called "America the Beautiful". In my classroom we sing a patriotic song each day after saying the flag salute. This is one of the songs we use. The video features pictures of American symbols as the song is playing in the background. I think the children would enjoy the pictures and being able to sing along with the music.
The second video is called "Ecosystems: Watersheds, Estuaries, and Wetlands". It can be found at http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=9709D1CB-97C5-49F5-AA26-4ACC3D5D50E8&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US. This is one segment of a series of videos which would all be useful in my third grade classroom when teaching about different water systems and how they work. Aside from the pictures of the video, all pertinent science vocabulary words pop up on the screen so that the students see them when they hear them used. This segment is 2minutes and 25 seconds long.
The third video that I would like to use in my class is called "American Heroes and Heroines: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We study about Dr. King in January and I would like to use this video to "bring to life" some of the information that we typically read about. It lasts fourteen minutes and forty-six seconds and tells the story of his life and his importance in our country's history. It is located at http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=33633B68-718D-41D9-ADC4-D6582CD45632&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US.
There is technically a computer projector available in our building which I could sign out. However it never seems to work correctly when any of us tries to use it. So if I use a video in my room I try to borrow a laptop and show the video to small groups at a time. Consequently I don't use on-line videos very often.
