Robin Palmer - Canton Elementary - First year - Kindergarten

This is my first year as a permanent teacher. I graduated from Mansfield University December 2003 and started my career substitute teaching for the Canton and Troy Area school districts. Last year (2006-07) I taught first-grade as a long-term substitute. This year (2007-08) I am teaching kindergarten, next year who knows - maybe kindergarten again or on to first-grade - I'm flexible! I am just happy having a classroom to call "home" and a class of students that I enjoy teaching. I have "worked" for 20+ years and teaching is definitely where I belong because it doesn't feel like "work".

I am married to my Canton High School Sweetheart, Scott  - 20 years!!!! We have two beautiful daughters, Jessica (17) and Morgan (14). We love spending our spare time traveling together to Morgan's softball games, Jessica's Stained Glass performances, and anywhere we have a chance to shop and try a new restuarant!

5 Lesson plans:

1. Expert System/ Nonlinear Interactive Program: Math lesson – Symmetry  - Everyday Math – Symmetry in Nature – follow up with interactive quiz.

http://www.linkslearning.org/Kids/1_Math/2_Illustrated_Lessons/4_Line_Symmetry/index.html

2. Digital Photography – I used my digital camera to take pictures of my students doing various activities throughout the school year then will put together a photo album for each of my students for their kindergarten year “Memory Album”. I will also make a Powerpoint for my students to view at the end of the year to reminisce about our year together. I will also be using my digital camera to create a virtual tour of our classroom that I will put on my school webpage.

3. Spreadsheets – I will use these to create graphs to demonstrating relationships of authentic student information. Ie: tooth loss, birthday months, ages, heights, and their “favorites”.

4. Virtual Technologies – I use United Streaming video clips and virtual tours to reinforce many lessons taught in my classroom. For example thus far this year I have used this technology during many of my Fall math, Science, and Social Studies units. Ie: apples, pumpkins, weaving, Johnny Appleseed, and  Thanksgiving themes. www.unitedstreaming.com

5. Semantic NetworksKidspiration – I could use this injunction with KidWriting for organizing graphic pictures relating to the “topic of the day” and/or story that we have read together. www.kidspiration.com

Webquest:

Being a kindergarten teacher, my students utilizing a Web Quest would be beyond anything imaginable at this point. As their teacher I am constantly on a daily quest for websites that will enhance the learning that is taking place in my classroom. For example I use www.internet4classrooms.com and www.unitedstreaming.com on a regular basis. It gives my students a chance to use the whiteboard in our classroom and to interact and reinforce the lesson just taught.

I liked your virtual tour. I made a note to check your wiki page/link to find out more - I'd like to know how to do that myself.

Great job!!!! I'm amazed at how much technology you truly enjoy using - especially being a little more of an immigrant than myself ;) I also don't know how you do it - mom, wife, first year teacher....and keeping up with this technology class. I'm glad it didn't stress you out too much.
