Session 2: Internet Safety Issues for Children

Articles to read:

Read the following articles and visit our discussion board to comment on my post related to these articles

>>>MySpace, Facebook and Other Social Networking Sites: Hot Today, Gone Tomorrow? (you can actually listen to the article, which I did :o)

As you are reading think about some of these issues:  How has 'social networking' changed the way you connect to others, if at all?  Have you used any of these services?  Do you enjoy using an 'online community'? Will you continue to use it?  How can someone expoit these services?  What ways are/can students use these tools to 'cause trouble'?

Pay special attention to the Safety and Privacy Issues section of the article.

>>>Over the next few weeks we are going to look extensively at GetNetWise.org.  We want to focus on the Safety Guide section, but more specifically this week the Risks section.

If you would, please right click on the word Risks .  Choose (that's tech teacher talk for left, or the usual click) on the choice Open in New Window.  I would like you to have that website open and look at this page too.  There, now you have new window open with the GetNetWise website open to What are the Risks for Children Online?, correct.  If not, please try it again, I'll wait for you ;o)

The page on this site that we want to look at closely is on the left hand side under What Kinds of Risks Are There? and it says Metting Someone Online.  In our discussion forum I have asked that you point out some of the common threads from the articles I've listed on this page.  Here you will find more guidelines.  Please take a look at the Safety by Age section as well.  Pay close attention to the age groups that you interact with the most.  Finally on this particular section of the GetNetWise website, visit the Social Networking Sites link on the left hand side under the heading of Risks by Technology.  Notice again some of the guidelines and resources available.

Don't forget to visit our discussion board to finish your assignment for this week.  Remember, click on the word Reply at the bottom of the discussion board article written by me.  Thanks.... Clinton

MySpace, Facebook article. As a source of revenue- here today gone tomorrow- if the company oes not keep track of the revenues that it generates. Dangerous- I think so. Employers are checking out thses sites to learn about potential employees. I have heard about a great many unsavory things being put on these sites by users who either do not care or do not realize that you have just posted info to the entire world. The police can make arrests from the info they find on these spaces. Both my kids have these acounts. I know Cathryn is doing ok with hers. I hope Mathew is too. As for me I do not think I will get one.
How to talk to young people about Socializing online-under control is a great line -do not believe it.Kids think that they are safe. All info the put on the internet is fair game for not only the good guys but the bad. It may be erased on the site but it may not be gone from the internet. Bad info seems to live for seemingly forever.I think that showing your child as a partner in teling them about dangers is important. Law and Order SVU has had a couple of shows that deal with this very subject that I felt were worth using with children.
How to help keep kids connected and Protected-
Supervision is key. Communication is a really good thing- talking about where you have been in the internet will help your kids to talk with you about where they have been. A thing that would have been of help to me is parental control software- restriction of access. It might be a good idea to emloy someone else to come check your computer weekly or so to help police the info your child is accessing.
