Session 2: Internet Safety Issues for Children
Articles to read:
Read the following articles and visit our discussion board to comment on my post related to these articles
>>>MySpace, Facebook and Other Social Networking Sites: Hot Today, Gone Tomorrow? (you can actually listen to the article, which I did :o)
As you are reading think about some of these issues: How has 'social networking' changed the way you connect to others, if at all? Have you used any of these services? Do you enjoy using an 'online community'? Will you continue to use it? How can someone expoit these services? What ways are/can students use these tools to 'cause trouble'?
Pay special attention to the Safety and Privacy Issues section of the article.
>>>Over the next few weeks we are going to look extensively at GetNetWise.org. We want to focus on the Safety Guide section, but more specifically this week the Risks section.
If you would, please right click on the word Risks . Choose (that's tech teacher talk for left, or the usual click) on the choice Open in New Window. I would like you to have that website open and look at this page too. There, now you have new window open with the GetNetWise website open to What are the Risks for Children Online?, correct. If not, please try it again, I'll wait for you ;o)
The page on this site that we want to look at closely is on the left hand side under What Kinds of Risks Are There? and it says Metting Someone Online. In our discussion forum I have asked that you point out some of the common threads from the articles I've listed on this page. Here you will find more guidelines. Please take a look at the Safety by Age section as well. Pay close attention to the age groups that you interact with the most. Finally on this particular section of the GetNetWise website, visit the Social Networking Sites link on the left hand side under the heading of Risks by Technology. Notice again some of the guidelines and resources available.
Don't forget to visit our discussion board to finish your assignment for this week. Remember, click on the word Reply at the bottom of the discussion board article written by me. Thanks.... Clinton
