Course Description

The course presumes that you have background knowledge of the Internet, fundamental educational instructional design and/or lesson planning skills, and basic computer literacy.  This course is intended for individuals interested in educational applications of the Internet.  Specifically, we will be focusing on creating resources for delivery via the Internet.  A variety of techniques will be presented.

Remember that it is our goal this week to create one cohesive multimedia instructional unit.  All assignments should relate back to the topic that you have chosen.  While it can be a new topic, it is recommended that you transform a unit of instruction that you are currently using into a newer, technologically based unit.

There can be flexibility in each of the assignments.  For example, for the Google docs presentation, it can be something that you are going to create to present to your class or it can be something that is an assignment for the students to complete.  If it is the latter, you are responsible for creating an example of what you would expect from your students.

Proposal for Unit of Instruction

Before we get into the core material of the course, please take some time to outline your goals for the week.  Create a word processing document that addresses the following questions.  Submit it to me via email when you are done.

1.  What is your topic for your instructional unit this week (The Battle of Gettysburg, Hamlet, Photosynthesis, Long Division...)?

2.  In the past, how have you taught this unit of instruction?  How much technology have you used in presenting this information previously?

3.   How much time do you spend on this unit of instruction (1 day, 1 week, 1 marking period...)?

4.  Consider the assignments you are going to create (Google docs pdf, Google docs presentation, graphics software, digital storytelling video).  Briefly describe your goals for each.  Will they be created by you?  Will they be created by the students?  What is the purpose of each?

5.  What methods of evaluation will you use for this unit of instruction?

Checklist of Items to be Completed

1.  Video file- this must be "finished" so that it can be distributed and must be uploaded to a website and embedded in a webpage.  Email me the link to the video.

2.  Graphics files- most likely, these will be included in your video.  However, if you have not used any Fireworks/Picnik graphics in your video, you should include them in one of the other assignments.

3.  PDF file- using Google docs, create at least one pdf file to accompany the video and the rest of your unit of instruction.  The content of this file is completely yours.  For example, it can be background information on the topic of your unit of instruction for distribution to your students, it can be a worksheet that students are required to complete on the subject, or it can be student based- it can be a part of the unit that you expect the students to complete.  If you are thinking of using this option, you must create an example of what you would expect the student work to look like.  Share this with me via Google docs.

4.  Presentation file- this will be very much like #3.  The content is your decision and it can fall into any of the categories listed above or it can serve another purpose as long as it is part of your unit of instruction.  Share this with me via Google docs.

5.  Lesson plan- again using Google docs, write a lesson plan for me describing the implementation of your unit of instruction.  Included in the plan should be the title of your unit, the intended audience, the amount of time to be spent on the unit, a list of resources to be used in addition to the items created during this class (if applicable), and a description of how the unit of instruction will proceed (including methods of evaluation).  Share this with me via Google docs.

6.  Presentation- when everybody is done, a short presentation demonstrating your work for the week will be given.  Presentations should be between 5 and 10 minutes.  Presentations should detail your lesson plan in #5 and should show your video clip.
