Assignment 5

This video was very interesting because the teacher in the video, Mrs Walker, used a new technique to teach the trial of Tom Robinson to her class.  I had actually tried something similar to her approach a few years ago, but was not thrilled with how it turned out.  Her video showed how she perfected her technique over a couple of years.  Even if I don't use the video itself (and I may), I feel the idea is an excellent one, and I would like to be able to create a video just for the class.  I believe it brings the trial to life and makes the students feel and react to Tom's horrible, "no way out" situation.  I hope it makes them feel the frustration and anger of Scout, Dill, and Jem.

This particular video portrayed some of the key information of the plight of the Jews during WW2.  I believe it will be helpful in showing the students not only key points about Anne Frank, but also how a good video project should be constructed.

I decided to search for something to do with grammar/literary devices, etc.. as eighth graders are supposed to know a lot of this for the PSSA's.  I am always trying to teach students to be careful with nouns and antecedents--they say nouns and what?!  This video portrays the problem with ambiguity through the use of Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First."  Not only could it help students be more careful with their references, but it is thoroughly entertaining which I believe will make students more receptive to the lesson.

I do not have a projector in my room to use at my convenience.  I believe I can schedule one for use, but I did not get a response to my email to our tech person.  Today, the new wireless phone system, the smartboards, and some other big ticket items were being installed.  I think that's probably why I have yet to hear back from her!

Assignment 4

1.  Three reasons that podcasting is becoming so popular are that anyone can do it, you can subscribe
to podcasts which can be captured and watched at your leisure, and there is a variety of gadgetry with
which you can tune into podcasts.

2.  No, podcasts work on all sorts of devices.

3.  No, you can watch podcasts on your computer.

4.  Three ways in which podcasting differs from traditional broadcasting are it is portable, inexpensive
to produce and watch, and there is no need for television, antennas, etc.

5.   As we are currently reading To Kill a Mockingbird in eighth grade, I chose to research podcasts
about this novel.  One of the podcasts I found was on podcastblaster.com.  This was a podcast
prepared by a teacher to give additional information on one of the chapters the class had discussed
in school.  I found it interesting on two levels.  One is that I can listen to another teacher's interpretation
of the book, and the second is that I could potentially use this myself to supplement class instruction.

The second podcast site I looked at was reelreviewsradio.com.  This podcast was an 11 minute
overview of the movie, To Kill a Mockingbird.  While I have seen this movie, the website has potential
because I could research other videos, either on To Kill a Mockingbird or on any other subject we
      may cover.

The third podcast was a real gold mine.  It was mediafly.com, and Sissy Spacek was telling the story
from Scout's point of view.  While the learning support room has the audiotape of this novel, it cost
them approximately $100.  By using this podcast, students could listen to the story (any student with
the right computer set up) for free.   I may check this out with some of my reluctant readers immediately.

Search Engine Assignment

Your assignment is to choose a topic relevant to your subject area and search for useful information on it using three different search engines. Please answer the questions below.

Topic in your subject area: _Background information for To Kill a Mockingbird________________________________

Search Engine #1: _Google______________________________________

Basic Search

How many results were returned? 48,000_______________________

Using only the top ten results, how many appear to be useful? 8_______

List the web addresses of the top five results: http://library.thinkquest.org/12111/novel.html

Give your overall opinion of this search engine.

Google is the search engine I use the most at school as it is the search engine which is on our NEB home page. I find it fairly easy to use and get a lot of information from it; however, I found that MSN and Dogpile offered a lot more links to additional sites. I also think there is a great similarity between Google and Yahoo, which is what I normally use at home.

Search Engine #2: MSN_______________________________________

How many results were returned? _76,200_______________________

Using only the top ten results, how many appear to be useful? ___8____

Give your overall opinion of this search engine.

Believe it or not, this is the first time I have ever used MSN, and I really liked it! Though a lot of the websites were the same as Google, I found that, when I actually clicked on the websites, there were additional links that were easy to get to and very helpful.
Search Engine #3: Dogpile_______________________________________

Basic Search

How many results were returned? _no number was listed—at least that I could see_______________________

Using only the top ten results, how many appear to be useful? ___7____

List the web addresses of the top five results:

Give your overall opinion of this search engine.
I found this search engine to be very satisfactory as it pulled from a lot of other search engines (Yahoo, Google, etc.) for its sources. I also found relevant links easy to use.

In conclusion, which one did you like best? Which one did you like least? Why?

I really liked MSN, though I could see myself getting sidetracked on my research because lots of interesting items come up on the webpage. I liked the easy access to other helpful websites. Overall, I would say it’s pretty user-friendly. I am not sure which I liked the least between Yahoo and Google (though I didn’t include Yahoo as one of my three, I am very familiar with it). Even though these two were the ones I had used the most thus far in my internet career, I probably will use MSN and Dogpile more. I think Yahoo and Google are more limited in what I can access through them. Both MSN and Dogpile had links which were easy to access from their sites. I believe both also had more sources available.

Hi, I'm Terry Brown, and I'm a language arts teacher at Northeast Bradford Jr./Sr. High School.  I teach the entire eighth grade class and two classes of General English 12--the joys of a small district!  My husband, Barry (also a teacher at NEB), and I live in the exact geographical center of our school district, along with two dogs and six cats (one of which is mine!).  My son is currently a junior economics major at Mansfield University.  My daughters are currently living in northern VA.  Kristi is an art teacher at Riverbend Middle School in Loundoun County.  Mindi is a nurse at Potomac Hospital.  Since I have been suffering from empty-nest syndrome since my youngest daughter moved out, my long-coated Akita, Kiri Anne, is now my big baby (90 lbs. and still growing!).
